TOEFL iBT Reading

iBT module Academic reading
Provider: ETS (Educational Testing Service)
Practise how to read for purpose, locate evidence fast, and answer questions under time pressure.

TOEFL iBT Reading evaluates your ability to understand and analyse university-level texts similar to what you see in first-year courses. Most tasks are multiple-choice, with occasional reading-to-learn items that test organisation and synthesis.

Format snapshot
  • Typically two passages (academic topics) in the current TOEFL iBT format
  • Roughly 35 minutes total time for Reading (check ETS for the latest timing)
  • Score contributes to the overall TOEFL iBT total score
What you will practise
  • Main idea and purpose identification
  • Vocabulary in context and reference
  • Inference and author's attitude
  • Rhetorical function and sentence simplification
  • Reading-to-learn tasks such as summary / category completion (when included)
💡 Best practice sequence: untimed accuracy first, then timed sets, then mixed question-type drills.

IELTS Reading (Academic and General Training)

Reading module Question types
Provider: IELTS (British Council / IDP / Cambridge)
Practise IELTS question types, skimming/scanning, and evidence-based answering.

IELTS Reading differs by test type. Academic Reading uses three long academic passages. General Training Reading uses texts from everyday and workplace contexts plus one longer passage. The question types are varied and include more than MCQs.

Format snapshot
  • Academic: three passages, 60 minutes total
  • General Training: three sections, 60 minutes total
  • Answers are transferred directly to the answer sheet (no extra transfer time in Reading)
What you will practise
  • Matching headings / information
  • True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given
  • Sentence completion and summary completion
  • Multiple choice and matching features
  • Identifying writer's views, claims, and logical flow
💡 In IELTS Reading, speed comes from strategy: know the question type, predict what evidence looks like, then scan for anchors.

Build reading confidence through a clear exam pathway.

Move from understanding the format to mastering question types and improving under time pressure. Each step is designed to help you practise with purpose instead of moving randomly from one exercise to another.

1

Understand the format

Know the structure, timing, and question style before entering practice.

2

Target question types

Practise inference, vocabulary, matching, completion, and evidence-based items.

3

Improve under time

Move from accuracy-focused drills into timed reading sets.

This visual guide connects each practice activity to the skills students need for TOEFL iBT Reading and IELTS Reading.

Skill-based practice
Skim for structureRecognise paragraph roles, author purpose, and the overall direction of the passage.
Scan for evidenceUse names, dates, keywords, and paraphrases to locate answer zones quickly.
Interpret meaningHandle vocabulary in context, inference, reference, and implied claims.

TOEFL vs IELTS focus

TOEFLAcademic passages with a strong emphasis on comprehension, inference, rhetorical function, and text organisation.
IELTSBroader question variety, including matching, completion, True/False/Not Given, and locating information.
Best routeStart with the exam track you need, then practise by question type before attempting longer timed sets.

Common questions

Which exam should you choose?

Choose based on your university, employer, or immigration requirement. TOEFL and IELTS both assess academic English, but institutions may prefer one. Always confirm the required test type (IELTS Academic vs General Training) and the target score.

Is Reading all multiple-choice?

Not across both exams. TOEFL iBT Reading is largely multiple-choice. IELTS Reading includes multiple-choice, but also completion, matching, and judgement items (e.g., True/False/Not Given).
